Chapter 14

Kate's hand rested on the gearshift under Nicolas's as he took the final corner to her house. He upshifted the gears, and Kate felt the power of the engine radiate up her arm. Her giggle accented the air above the growl of the powerful motor and made them both laugh harder. High-schoolish? Kate pushed the thought away. What if it was? Hadn't she decided...hadn't they both decided to see where their business and personal relationship would take them? Shouldn't that exploration be fun?

His red Camaro gathered a bit of speed, and he shifted two more times before roaring to a stop in front of her house. They both surged against the seat belts when he applied the brakes. Her hand, warm beneath his, grew cold when Nicolas reached to turn off the engine. He positioned the gear shift a final time and turned to face her. "I can't believe you never drove a stick shift."

"I can't believe no one ever offered to let me try." She raised her brows at him. "You are offering, right?"

His answer was interrupted by the roar of the dual exhaust of the blue Chevy four-by-four approaching from the opposite corner. The truck turned into the drive and nosed up to the back bumper of her car. Kate climbed out and met her son on the curb beside the Camaro.

Patrick gave her a quick squeeze and buzzed her cheek with his lips before stepping away to walk around the shiny sports car. He whistled as he completed his inspection. "That is a mag set of wheels! 350?"

"396."

Patrick took a step back, both hands on his hips, eyebrows lowered in concentration. "1970, right?"

Nicolas stiffened at Kate's side. She frowned as he stared at Patrick in a lengthy silence. Kate touched his arm. "Nicolas?"

Nicolas actually shook under her hand. He blinked. "What?"

"Are you OK? You're white as a sheet?"

He blinked and took a couple of deep breaths. When he faced Patrick again, he'd regained most of his color.

"I'm sorry, what did you say?"

"I asked if it was a 1970," Patrick repeated

"Close," Nicolas said. "She's one of the last to roll off the line for 1972."

"Sweet. Can I touch it?"

Nicolas turned the keys over in his hands. When he answered Patrick, his tone was pleasant enough, but the smile on his face failed to reach his eyes. "Your mom wants to drive it." He held out his hand. "I don't know if you remember me. Nicolas Black."

Patrick grasped the proffered hand. "I'm not likely to forget anything or anyone involved in Bobbie's kidnapping. Thanks again, Detective, for what you did for my family."

"Just glad we got a happy ending."

That long weekend in December was still a painful subject for everyone involved. It didn't surprise Kate when Patrick turned back to the car and abruptly changed the subject.

"So, tell me about this beauty. Where on earth did you find her?"

"Dad and I bought her at an auction when I was fifteen. We spent a couple of years restoring it. Then I drove it for a year.
